The name Proteus originates in Greek mythology where Proteus is sea-god, or god of oceanic bodies of water.  He is ascribed the god of "elusive sea change" and once you've experienced staying at Proteus Beach House, the name makes perfect sense.  Proteus is also the origin of the name of the national flower of South Africa, the Protea which grows abundantly in Rooi Els.

The location

After careful consideration, Rooi Els ticked all the boxes for an idillic beach house location.  Rooi Els is a small village within the Kogelberg Biosphere about 45 minutes drive from Cape Town International airport and just over 1 hour to the heart of Cape Town. Driving to Rooi Els is an experience in itself as you marvel at the beauty of nature negotiating Clarens Drive, listed as one of the most scenic drives in the world.   With the immense pressure of everyday life, being able to escape the busy scenery of a city, yet being within easy distance of the allure of city life, Rooi Els makes perfect sense as a wonderful holiday destination.   If you are a wine lover, there are multiple world class wineries nearby, most with excellent restaurants and tourist facilities.  Have a look at nearby attraction to explore the local area.  Rooi Els itself has a very popular pub about 10min walk from the house where you can enjoy a refreshing cold pint, a glass of wine or some of usual favourites on their dining menu.
